… Because we all have opinions.

Plenty to like during first week of Spring

The first week of Spring Training has passed by in a flash, with the Orioles finishing the week with a 3-4-1 record.

Adam Jones has started the exhibition month red hot, slashing .429/.429/1.000 through 14 at bats. Of Jones’ six hits, four have been for extra bases, with two doubles and two home runs. New catcher Welington Castillo has collected four hits in his first 10 at bats, two of which were doubles, while another offseason addition, Chris Johnson, is 5-for-15 – also with a pair of doubles.

Unsurprisingly, the power has been on display during the first week, with the bats clearing the fence on 10 occasions. Of those expected to be on the opening day roster, Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, Caleb Joseph, and Joey Rickard each have one. 20-year-old Ryan Mountcastle, the O’s first round pick in 2015, also connected with a 2-run bomb on Thursday to tie things up against the Twins with two out in the 9th.

On the pitching front, Jayson Aquino has looked sharp, allowing just one hit and striking out six through four scoreless innings, and Zach Stewart has also been clean through his 3.1 innings of work. Fighting for a roster spot, Tyler Wilson has allowed just the one hit through his five innings thus far, a solo shot off Yankess DH Matt Holliday on Thursday night.

Another pleasing sign has been the team’s willingness to run, having already swiped eight bags. Offseason Rule 5 pick Aneury Tavarez (three) and last year’s Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard (two) lead the way.

The second week of the campaign will see five O’s head off on national commitments as part of the upcoming World Baseball Classic. These being:

  • Adam Jones and Mychal Givens (USA)
  • Manny Machado and Welington Castillo (Dominican Republic)
  • Jonathan Schoop (Netherlands)

For the rest of those in camp, the following schedule awaits.

  • Friday 3 March, @ Pirates
  • Saturday 4 March, @ Rays
  • Sunday 5 March, vs. Phillies
  • Monday 6 March, @ Tigers
  • Tuesday 7 March, vs. Dominican Republic (WBC warm-up)
  • Wednesday 8 March, vs. Blue Jays
  • Thursday 9 March, (no game)
