What a day to kick off the Masters at Augusta! Heavy winds played havoc on the players as they made their way around the picturesque golf course.
A quick recap of the top three golfers in the world:
Jason Day had a fantastic front nine, heading to the 10th hole at -5, then from the 13th/14th onwards he started going downhill, quickly. He made it through nine holes with his card at 31 but on the back nine he finished with 41 meaning he is tied in 21st position at even par. His back nine included a triple bogey, his first ever at the Masters, that sent him crashing down the leaderboard.
Jordan Spieth was the least affected by the conditions and made his way to the top of the leaderboard early on with a -6 66 as he made his way back to the clubhouse.
Rory McIlroy looked the goods throughout his round and was on track to overtake Spieth until a few hiccups on the back nine had him further down the leaderboard than expected. He made his way back to the 19th tee with his card at -2.
There were a number of highlights throughout the first day, regardless of the conditions, and also one particular lowlight that is a highlight in a round-about sort of way.
Danny Lee, from New Zealand, is sitting at -4 the card and tied for second spot behind Spieth. The world number 72 had a solid patch from the 8th tee, rattling off a few birdies in a row to move him up the board.
The man sitting with Lee on -4 is Irishman Shane Lowry. The Irishman had a fantastic front nine and an average back nine with no birdies in the final ten holes, so the fact he has stayed at the top shows how consistently he played today.
Last years runner-up, Justin Rose, had a solid round as well. Potting six birdies for the day and heading back to the clubhouse tied in fourth position at -3. At this stage he and McIlroy are looking the biggest challengers to Spieth from the top 10 ranked golfers in the world.
The highlight of the days play came from Ernie Els. The Big Easy made history on day one, hole one of the 2016 Masters. Those of us who know the game of golf and play golf, this is absolute torture BUT it is also kind of funny –
