This is what the Illawarra Hawks fans were hoping would happen when the signings of Kevin Lisch, Kirk Penney and AJ Ogilvy were announced. This is what every other team in the National Basketball League has to stop if they’re going to defeat the Hawks. This is what’s going to make the Hawks one of the teams to watch this season.

Their big three; Kevin Lisch, Kirk Penney and AJ Ogilvy, in the game against the Townsville Crocodiles on Wednesday night rose up and performed like the fans hoped they would.

Ogilvy: 28pts (11/14fg, 6/7ft), 13rbds, 1ast, 1stl and 2blks in 27 minutes.

Penney: 24pts (8/15fg, 3/5 3pt, 5/7ft), 3rbds, 5asts and 2stls in 36 minutes.

Lisch: 25pts (9/14fg, 4/6 3pt, 3/3ft), 5rbds and 5asts in 34 minutes.

They were simply unstoppable against the Crocs with Ogilvy inside and Lisch/Penney on the perimeter. It was a quiet night from Oscar Forman and Tim Coenraad, who only had two shot attempts and six shot attempts respectively. If the big three are the primary scorers then those two are the clear secondary options and the Hawks had no need for their shooting ability on this night.

There aren’t too many teams that will be able to stop the Hawks if the big three are scoring 20+ points a night and Forman and/or Coenraad chip in 10-15pts. They’re an extremely good inside and outside team on the offensive end and also have one of the best defensive centres in the league anchoring them at the other end of the court.

Just wait until Rhys Martin comes back!
