I am sure Pauline Hanson would be asking the same question!
If Arnold Schwarzenegger can cut it as Governor of California, then why can’t the former New South Wales premier Kristina Keneally bring back to life Australian Basketball?
I am dubious that this combination will be effective with her focus being on the WNBL. Don’t get me wrong Elizabeth Cambage is a great example of women players at their best, playing in the WNBA last season and now back in Australia for the WNBL. The potential is there, but Australia needs to churn out a higher level of players, if the NBL is struggling then how can Keneally justify pumping money in to the WNBL?
Last year Knox Basketball Inc. registered over 1,000 teams, which is proof that basketball is very much alive in the community, and I hope that Kristina Keneally taps in to the fact that the fan base is the community, sponsorships looks great if you want the T-Shirt, but if you can’t reconnect the community with the NBL then it will be tough times ahead for the sport and the players involved.
What I would like to see is more engagement between the NBL and the community. In New York City on 4th Street there is an enclosed basketball court known as the ‘Cage’ it’s the place where legends are born, where skills are mastered and execution is infallible. Wouldn’t it be great if Melbourne had a similar setting, where egos are put on the line and arrogance littered all over the court? Entertain me Melbourne, show me that the best city in Australia has attitude!
